ECS Gold Card Guide: Requirements, Qualifications & How to Apply

An ECS Gold Card shows that the holder has met the recognised qualification and occupational competence requirements for the electrotechnical occupation stated on the card.

When people talk about an electrician Gold Card, they are often referring to the ECS Installation Electrician Gold Card. ECS describes this card as being for Level 3 competency-based skilled individuals who work unsupervised within the Installation Electrician occupational scope.

The Installation Electrician card is not the only Gold Card. Maintenance Electrician, Domestic Electrician and a number of other skilled electrotechnical occupations have their own Gold Card requirements.

ECS stands for the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme. It certifies people working in electrotechnical occupations and issues cards based on the qualifications, assessments and occupational evidence they can demonstrate.

This is an important distinction. Someone cannot simply choose a Gold Card because an employer or site has asked them for one. ECS checks the evidence supplied and the applicant must satisfy the criteria for the occupation shown on the card.

ECS is the electrotechnical partner scheme to CSCS, so the appropriate ECS card is widely used on construction sites where electrotechnical work is being carried out.

Since 1 January 2019, anyone applying for an Installation or Maintenance Electrician Gold Card for the first time must also sign up to ECS Registered Electrician status.

For those applicants, this means being qualified to the current edition of BS 7671 required by ECS and signing up to the ECS Code of Professional Practice, in addition to satisfying the occupational qualification requirements for the Gold Card.

Registered Electrician status also includes a commitment to professional development and keeping electrical knowledge up to date.

For modern Installation Electrician routes, the important requirement is reaching the recognised Level 3 competency-based occupational standard.

A relevant Level 3 NVQ is one common route because it assesses competence in the workplace rather than only classroom knowledge. An approved Level 3 apprenticeship can also satisfy the occupational qualification requirement.

There are also recognised historical and legacy qualification routes. Electricians who trained to the industry-recognised standard in an earlier period may still be eligible where ECS accepts that route and the required certificates can be provided.

Recognised qualification routes include a practical assessment of occupational competence. Depending on the route, this may be the AM2, AM2S or AM2E.

This is why it is more accurate to look at your complete qualification route rather than assuming every Gold Card applicant needs exactly the same AM2 version.

For example, the Installation and Maintenance Experienced Worker Assessment concludes with the AM2E. Apprenticeship and other recognised routes can involve a different version of the competence assessment.

For a current Installation Electrician Gold Card application, ECS requires a recognised BS 7671:2018 qualification.

BS 7671 is commonly referred to as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. For first-time Installation and Maintenance Gold Card applicants, holding the required current Wiring Regulations qualification also forms part of the Registered Electrician requirements.

Passing the 18th Edition by itself does not make somebody a qualified electrician or automatically qualify them for a Gold Card. It is one requirement within a wider occupational competence route.

Yes. The Installation and Maintenance Electrician Experienced Worker Assessment provides a recognised route for practising electricians who have significant existing experience but have not completed an apprenticeship or equivalent recognised Level 3 occupational qualification.

For this EWA route, TESP requires at least five years of experience working as a practising electrician across the required scope. Time spent in full-time or part-time education or training does not count towards those five years.

Applicants normally need a recognised Level 2 electrical theory qualification providing the required foundation knowledge. TESP also has an EWA Entry Test route for some highly experienced electricians who do not hold the usual Level 2 qualification.

You must also be currently working across the required scope because workplace evidence must be generated after enrolment. The EWA must be completed within a maximum of 18 months and the Installation/Maintenance route concludes with the AM2E.

TESP states that successful completion of the EWA and AM2E meets the qualification criteria for an ECS Gold Card application.

An overseas electrical qualification does not automatically convert into an ECS Installation Electrician Gold Card.

ECS requires electricians trained outside the UK to demonstrate that they meet the equivalent UK occupational qualification standard.

Current ECS guidance uses an Ecctis Electrotechnical Skills Statement as part of this process, followed by the appropriate Experienced Worker Assessment before an Installation or Maintenance Electrician Gold Card application can be made.

ECS publishes its current application and assessment fees online. The amount you pay can depend on the application type and whether other assessments or services are required.

Rather than putting a fixed price into this guide that could become outdated, check the current ECS fees immediately before applying.

ECS says its cards are typically valid for three years, although some card types can have different validity periods.

ECS currently allows card renewal once there are less than six months remaining before the expiry date.

Renewal requirements depend on the card and the applicant's circumstances, so use MyECS and the current ECS guidance rather than assuming renewal is simply an automatic replacement card.

Installation or Maintenance Electricians whose Gold Card has been expired for more than a year can also be required to meet the current initial application requirements, including the Registered Electrician criteria.

It would be misleading to describe an ECS Gold Card as a universal legal licence that everybody must hold before they can carry out electrical work.

ECS states that the electrotechnical industry expects electricians working unsupervised to hold the appropriate ECS Gold Card, and the scheme is widely used by employers and construction sites to verify occupational status.

Individual employers, clients and sites can also make possession of the appropriate ECS card a requirement for particular work or site access.

Separately, electrical safety law requires appropriate competence or supervision for work where technical knowledge or experience is necessary to prevent danger. Possessing a card does not remove an employer's responsibility to ensure a person is competent for the work they actually carry out.
