What is the 18th Edition?
The simplest way to think about it is this: BS 7671 is the main rule book used for electrical installations in the UK.
Its full name is BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations. You will also hear people call it the Wiring Regulations, the 18th Edition or simply “the regs”.
The current publication is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, commonly known as the Orange Book.
You are not expected to memorise the whole book
Electricians use BS 7671 as a reference. A big part of the course is learning how the book is organised and how to find the right requirement when you need it.

Do you need the 18th Edition?
It depends on what stage you are at and what work you want to do. The 18th Edition is widely used across electrical installation, maintenance, design and inspection work, but it is not a shortcut to becoming qualified.
Brand new to the trade
You do not need to rush out and buy the course before you understand your wider training route. It is one part of learning to become an electrician.
Apprentice or improver
Wiring Regulations training often forms part of wider electrical training and can help you understand the rules behind the work you are doing.
Qualified electrician
Employers, schemes and some ECS card routes may require you to show a recognised BS 7671 qualification.
Already have an older certificate
Whether you need to update depends on the work, employer, scheme or ECS requirement that applies to you. Check before paying to retake the qualification.
Is the 18th Edition law? BS 7671 is a British Standard, not an Act of Parliament. It is the national standard used for electrical installations in the UK and is widely used to demonstrate appropriate electrical safety and good practice.

Which 18th Edition course do you book?
You do not need to become an expert in awarding-body codes before booking. The main thing is to make sure the course covers the current Amendment 4 version of BS 7671.

What does the course actually teach you?
The course teaches you how to understand and use BS 7671. It is not designed to turn you into a qualified electrician and it is not about memorising hundreds of regulation numbers.
How the book is laid out
You learn where the main sections are and how to move around BS 7671 without trying to memorise every page.
Electrical safety
You learn how the Wiring Regulations are used to reduce risks such as electric shock, fire and damage to electrical installations.
Choosing and installing equipment
You learn how the regulations affect the equipment, cables and protective devices used in different situations.
Inspection and testing
You learn where the regulations cover checking electrical work and recording the results.
Special locations
You learn that some places have extra requirements, such as bathrooms, EV charging locations and medical areas.
Finding the right answer
A big part of the course is learning how to use the contents, index and sections quickly enough to find the regulation you need.

What is the 18th Edition exam like?
For City & Guilds 2382-26, the assessment is an online, open-book, multiple-choice exam. You can use the permitted copy of BS 7671 during the exam.

Open book does not mean easy. You do not have enough time to read the book from scratch for every question. The useful skill is knowing roughly where the answer should be and finding it quickly.
EAL's current Amendment 4 qualification is also assessed through an open-book, 60-question on-screen examination. Always follow the exact assessment instructions given by your awarding organisation or centre.

How should you prepare for the exam?
The best revision is learning how to use the book quickly rather than trying to memorise it.
Learn the book layout
Know what the main parts cover so you have a good idea where to look before you start searching.
Use the contents and index
Practise turning a question into the right search word, then follow the references to the correct section.
Practise against the clock
Open book does not mean unlimited time. Use timed practice so looking things up becomes quicker.
Read the question carefully
Do not rush straight into the book. First work out exactly what the question is asking.
Use the current book
If you are starting the course now, study from BS 7671:2018+A4:2026 so your revision matches the current qualification.
Understand rather than memorise
Knowing where and how to find an answer is more useful than trying to remember hundreds of regulation numbers.
Check your centre's exam rules before the day. Rules around permitted books, notes, tabs and other materials are set by the awarding organisation. Follow the current instructions from your centre.

What are the main changes in Amendment 4?
Amendment 4 is the latest update to the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. There are changes throughout BS 7671, but a beginner does not need a long technical list before starting the course.
Battery storage
A new chapter covers fixed battery systems used to store and supply electrical energy, an area becoming more common with modern energy systems.
Power over Ethernet
New requirements cover systems that send electrical power through data cables as well as carrying data.
IT and communications systems
There are new requirements around functional earthing and bonding for certain information and communications equipment.
Medical locations
The section covering electrical installations in medical locations has received a major revision.
What does that mean for you?
If you are taking the course now, you do not need to learn every Amendment 4 change before you start. The important thing is that your course and book cover the current version, and that you learn how to find the new requirements when they apply.

Passing the 18th Edition shows that you understand how to use the Wiring Regulations. It is useful evidence for employers and can form part of the requirements for some electrical roles and ECS card routes.

What is the 18th Edition?
The 18th Edition is the everyday name for BS 7671, the UK national standard for electrical installations. The current publication is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, which includes Amendment 4.
Do I need the 18th Edition to become an electrician?
The 18th Edition is only one part of becoming an electrician. It shows knowledge of the Wiring Regulations, but recognised electrician routes also require the right technical training, workplace competence and practical assessment.
Can a beginner or apprentice take the 18th Edition?
Yes. City & Guilds 2382-26 does not require you to already be a qualified electrician, although the course makes more sense when you have some basic electrical knowledge. Apprentices often complete Wiring Regulations training as part of their wider route.
Is the City & Guilds 2382-26 exam open book?
Yes. You can use the permitted copy of BS 7671 during the exam. You still need to know how to navigate the book quickly because the exam is timed.
Which book should I use now?
If you are buying the Wiring Regulations or starting a new course now, use BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, commonly called the Orange Book. This is the latest published version.
Does the 18th Edition qualification expire?
The certificate itself does not have a simple fixed expiry date. However, BS 7671 is updated over time, and employers, schemes or ECS requirements may expect you to show knowledge of the version that is current when you apply or renew.
